Hannay was originally created by the Scottish author John Buchan in the novel
The Thirty Nine Steps (first published in 1915). Richard Hannay is a man of his times - a mining engineer from South Africa of Scottish origin, who lives by his own standards and wits, an Edwardian gentleman and adventurer upholding a moral code which is distinctly his own.
Although Hannay is an outsider, he is at once a rugged gentleman and a knight errant with the fairer sex. Portrayed on film by Robert Donat and Kenneth More, he is brought vividly to life on the small screen by
Robert Powell who had earlier portrayed him in the 1978 film of
The Thirty Nine Steps.
