Returning to Strathallen, the village in Scotland where he was born and where he spent the first seven years of his life, Richard Hannay meets Alison Ross, his childhood friend who is now the village schoolmistress.
Alison is now engaged to Lord Malcolm Drysdale, an impoverished nobleman, who in an endeavour to meet crippling death duties is selling some of his land to a company who want to start a business.
This act will cripple the community of Strathallen, which is comprised mainly of farmers.
When Hannay witnesses a violent crime, he is needed as a witness, and thus must stay in Strathallen until the Hearing. He finds that he is attracted to Alison, and she to him.
