Yet another show that is very close to being in the "brilliant, but canceled' category. Channing was a show from the early sixties "social drama era", which began a little before the beginning of the sixties with Naked City and probably ended when Slattery's People was canceled. The big trend in this period was shows featuring non-traditional heroes( Psychiatrists, highschool teachers, defense attorneys, social workers, surgeons, state legislators))dealing with current social problems. Channing focused on college teachers. It was, in fact one of the two TV dramas that I can think of that was set on a college campus. Jason Evers played Professor Joseph Howe, Korean War Vet and would-be novelist who taught English at Channing College. His mentor and advisor was Dean Baker, played by that wonderful character actor Henry Jones. The show fearured some truly remarkable Guest stars( Agnes Morrehead, James Earl Jones, Rip Torn, Dawn Wells,) and frequently boasted edgy, intelligent writing. However, it never attrected a big enough audience and vanished after its first season. Oddly, alot of episodes seem to exist in private collections.
