Wes Kennedy is a cop trying to cope with his wife's death, his job and two teen-agers. Wes investigates a murder involving a psychotic 12-year-old, while his children wrestle with affairs of the heart. DETECTIVE Wes Kennedy (Robert Desidero) has every reason to feel embittered. A veteran of the force, he was looking forward to spending a peaceful life at home with his wife and two kids when the worse happens — the senseless murder of his wife.
Knowing that he can never change the past nor bring the dead back to life, Kennedy decides to do his utmost to pick up the pieces and make the most of his life and also to be a good father to his teenage son Kevin (Jonathan Ward) and daughter Robin (Christina Applegate).
While his children sleep, Kennedy does his graveyard shift, roaming the streets and back alleys of Los Angeles, keeping his ears open for a sign of trouble while keeping his fingers crossed that there will be none.
Wes stalks a killer who has everyone on edge, especially Robin, who keeps hearing noises outside her door. Meanwhile, Kevin's buddies razz him about his new girl friend.
At work, Wes is teamed with an oversize partner who's a one-man wrecking crew, while at home, Kevin refuses to discuss his increasingly erratic behavior.
Robin's request for permission to visit a birth-control clinic adds to Wes's worries at work, which include the theft of his truck, an armed robber with garlic breath and the return of a 12-year-old murderer.
Wes has trouble keeping a watchful eye on Robin and on a protected witness, a country singer whose life has been threatened by her ex-husband.
Wes encounters hostility from Arno and from Robin, who thinks the woman in his life is a sexual predator.
Wes faces intense pressure to drop his assertion that a SWAT leader knew about a possible hostage before he rushed an armed robber; Kevin faces hurdles in track and field.
A shooting may cost Wes his badge; Kevin is being bullied at school; and Robin is starring in a rock video.
While pursuing cop killers, Wes must watch his volatile partner, whose fiancee was critically wounded by the suspects; and there's chemistry between Kevin and Robin's tutor, but the formula includes alcohol.
While Wes searches for the man who's been attacking women with scissors, Robin wants help nailing the narc she thinks set her up for a coke bust at school and Kevin wants driving instructions.
Wes thinks a reported robbery-assault was actually a domestic dispute, but he may have trouble making a case after he's jailed for contempt of court.
An off-duty bust escalates into a vice operation that requires Wes to go undercover; a judge who cited Wes for contempt seeks his help; Kevin and Robin plead for their own car.
Wes and his family are in jeopardy after he shoots a gang member and the gang leader vows revenge.
