Mike Sloan, the soldier killed in an accident on his way home, is laid to rest. However, the town is restless with race discrimination and love triangles brewing in the atmosphere. The Sloans reject their son's last wishes and refuse to let Gloria Davis (a black woman) sing at their son's funeral. Gina (the Italian wife) confronts Linda Metcalf (Mike Sloan's hometown girlfriend).
The Sloans learn that Gina (deceased son's wife) is pregnant. They offer her money to leave town. Gina takes the money but doesn't leave town, instead the community opens its doors to her. Gloria and Abe Davis (black family) get in trouble with the law for letting Gina (a white woman) stay at their home. However, Mike Sloan comes to their defense and clears the tension. Finally Gina accepts the invitation to live with the Hailey family in their small apartment. It's poetry in motion, when Jeff Metcalf sends an anonymous poem to Sarah Brewer (Hank Metcalf's sweetheart). Instead, Hank finds the poem and decides to profess his undying love for Sarah, who in turn loses her virginity to Hank Metcalf.
Robert brings home a wife; Ginger's promotion leads to a cheesecake role; Linda's newspaper editorial opens up a door.
Ginger ends up being the new Lemo Tomato Juice Girl and soon begins reconsidering marriage so she can enjoy the fame she's been receiving.
After Jeff and Ginger decide to postpone their wedding, Jeff quickly becomes unable to deal with her rising fame. Meanwhile, Abe starts carrying a gun after threats are made against his life.
Mike and Judy decide to have one more tryst while on a train to Detroit. Meanwhile, Ginger decides to accept a date with one of Jeff's teammates.
As all the couples end up fighting, new friendships are born between Anne, Al, Ruth and Mike; Abe and Gloria cannot make their rent; Judy begins lamenting over a loss and Gina offers to help Caroline out of her pain.
Jeff and the Lemo All-Stars end up boarding a train for games in the west, as do the Lemo Tomato Juice Girl and Caroline, who is in search of a quickie divorce for herself and hubby. Meanwhile back home, an apple cobbler in their oven alerts the Sloans to Gloria and Abe's deception.
