Famed feature-film director Barry Levinson brought a big screen sensibility and style to this unique mold breaking police drama, set in his home town of Baltimore, Maryland.
Based on David Simon’s novel Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, the series Homicide: Life on the Street was one of the first cop shows to almost exclusively focus on the individuals solving the crimes and how it affected them, featuring that interpersonal drama, instead of concentrating on the action. The cinematography, editing and even casting draw heavily from the motion picture industry. Many of the top stars in TV and film, did guest appearances and even cameo performances. The show was rewarded with numerous honors, among them Emmy and Peabody Awards, but continued to have a rocky relationship with the network. In spite of difficulties it held on for seven seasons and now is available in it’s entirety on DVD.
