Noriko "Max" Matsuda, Russell "Ace" Antonov, & Ricardo "Sharkey" Alvarez--cadets from the Academy of Galactic Exploration--find themselves lost in an uncharted sector of the galaxy. Under the guidance of their new friend, Kulai, they try to avoid the Triiad fleet and the traitor Paiyin. The three cadets are forced to remain in the hostile sector and not return to Earth in fear that the Triiad would follow them home.
