In the 1958 South, Forrest Bedford is struggling to raise his 3 children, Nathan, Francie, and John Morgan after their mother is hospitalized in a sanitorium so he hires Lily, a black housekeeper.
Lily's daughter finds John Morgan's lost hat and doesn't want to give it back; Forrest faces a tough case in which a beating took place at a demonstration.
Forrest goes away for the weekend with Nathan as Francie realizes she has no one to turn to when something important happens and John Morgan is worried about a stray dog.
Forrest begins his run for Attorney General and Lilly begins thinking about attending some local civil rights meetings.
Forrest mulls over the political consequences of a case; Lilly beseeches Foster to help her locate her missing father.
A group of Freedom Riders rolls into town, one of whom ends up staying with Lilly; Nathan takes his driver's license exam.
