Ironside: All in a Day's Work

After Ironside correctly guesses the ending to a suspense film in three minutes, the team leaves the theater. Mark and Ed go to retrieve the van, and before they return, two thieves race from a jewelry store. Eve chases them, is fired upon, fires back... and kills one of them – who turns out to be just seventeen years old. Wracked with guilt, she must help the team determine what happened... one last case before she ends her police career.

Episode Quotes
(as they are leaving the theater)
Ironside: It had to be the gardener. I told you that as soon as I...
Eve: But Chief, you didn't have to say it in such a loud voice.
Ironside: I did not raise my voice!
Ed: Then why was everyone going "Shh"?
Mark: And why did people keep moving away from us?
Ironside: They were not going "Shh" and they were not moving away, except perhaps to leave the theater exactly as we are doing.
Ed: We were asked to leave, Chief - remember?
Ironside: No, we were not asked to leave. The manager and I had a polite discussion about the movie. He admitted to us that the gardener was indeed the killer, as I told you in the first 3 1/2 minutes. Since we knew the ending of this "suspense" movie and since he offered to refund our money, we decided there was no reason to see the remaining 98 and 1/2 minutes.

Ed: He's dead.
Eve: He's only a kid...

Mrs. Matling: Seventeen years to raise him... one minute to put him away like a piece of meat. Are you the one that shot him?
Ironside: No...
Mrs. Matling: If you are, I hope you die for it!!
Ironside: Mrs. Matling, your son was armed and dangerous.
Mrs. Matling: Dangerous?!? (venomously) Oh, you police...

Eve: It's the first one of those (police shooting reports) I've had to fill out.
Ironside: You just remember that he shot first.
Eve: Chief, did you ever... did you ever have to kill anyone?
Ironside: Yes.
Eve: Just wish it hadn't happened so, so fast. One minute we were all having such a good time and the next minute... You know I shot him by reflex, Chief. He was shooting and I shot back.
Ironside: Which is exactly what you should have done.
Eve: I guess so. But he was so young.
Mark: Nobody with a gun is young. You give a kid an equalizer and he ages plenty fast.

Ironside: Eve, you're not... you are not responsible for this. You had a job to do, you did it honestly and to the best of your ability.
Eve: But it hurts. It hurts, Chief.
Ironside: If it didn't, you wouldn't be worth a damn.

(after Eve shoots a teenager)
Ed: She'll get over it, won't she, Chief?
Ironside: Ed, you don't get over it. You adjust to it.

Eve: To work.
Ironside: Which is?
Eve: Billy's employer. Harry may have paid him a visit there.
Ironside: I was wondering when you'd think of that. Ed.
Ed: We'll use my car.
Eve: I can handle this alone.
Ironside: This is still a police force. And that's plural.

Analysis
There was more distrust of police at the time this episode was written than is the case now, especially among younger people. The war in Vietnam was spinning up and protests were springing up. Politicians, angered at what they saw as disloyalty, frequently called upon police to suppress protests, damaging their general reputation in light of the First Amendment's guarantees of free speech. This undercurrent runs through the episode despite the fact that this particular shooting was justified.
