Ironside: Something for Nothing

Singer Tommy Cusack made the mistake of borrowing money from racketeer Roy Faber, whom the SFPD has been trying to put away for nearly a decade. Faber knows Cusack can't afford to pay so he sends his lackey Luther Zahn to extract a favor: Cusack's help with a bank robbery. Ironside correctly guesses the nature of the crime Faber's men plan and prevents it. Now Cusack's in a fix. Faber blackballs him from the city's clubs, then sends men to beat him. But Faber's in a fix, too. Cusack knows enough to put him away, if he'll testify. Trouble is, people who testify against Faber seem to develop health and memory problems...

Episode Quotes
Ironside: Mr. Faber, as in Mr. Drugs, as in Mr. Money Shark. Always in the background; delusions of invisibility. Calls himself Mr. Faber. The best lawyers, the most perfect alibis. Yes, I'm interested, Verna. I've lived with the smell of Mr. Faber for eight long years, and it is a smell. Yes, I'm very interested.

Tommy Cusack: Verna's a worrier. I gamble, she worries. I owe a man a few dollars, that's all.
Ironside: What man?
Tommy Cusack: A friend. A man who lent me the money.
Ironside: Mr. Faber doesn't have friends. Mr. Faber has possessions. Are you a possession, Tommy?

Ironside: If you think you can lie to me you're foolish. If you think you can lie to yourself, you're stupid.

Tommy Cusack: That's good chili.
Ironside: Only food fit for man - contains all the proper vitamins and minerals.

Ironside: You've got more brass than the whole Pentagon. You're offering him a bribe right in front of me.
Roy Faber: Prove it! I pay for the best legal talent in the country, and I get it! Tommy... I won't go to jail. So don't throw your career and marriage away in a useless attack on me.
Ironside: You're very cool and you're very frightened.
Roy Faber: Of you? The famous Ironside? Look at him, Tommy. There's your reward for years of dedication to the law... a cripple.
Ironside: Only on the outside, Faber. Not on the inside where it's ugly.

(after the case is solved)
Eve: Well, this calls for a celebration - meatballs!
Ironside: No, Eve.
Eve: Meatballs and chili. Lots and lots of good hot chili.
Ironside: Well, I guess just this one time.
