Recap

Carolyn White (Baxter) is suspected by police of having murdered her philandering husband when a trail of circumstantial evidence is discovered following his disappearance. Ironside (Burr) argues for time to have his staff track down White’s background. Even the discovery of the body of Candy Erickson, Carolyn’s rival, fails to convince Ironside of Carolyn’s guilt. His insistance upon evidence which will hold up in court brings out surprising facts about Carolyn and a bizarre close to the case. ..

Episode Quotes
Ironside: This whole day has been a pleasant surprise for me, Carolyn. You've held up even better then the cioppino.
Carolyn White: Oh, bless you, Robert. You're still the back-handed compliment champion of San Francisco.
Ironside: Uncontested. Only now that I'm in a wheelchair, people feel guilty when they get an overwhelming desire to knock me on my backside.
Carolyn White: Well, you never fooled me. Under that grouchy hide beats the heart of a beautiful tyrant. That's why I proposed to you several light years ago. It's a pity you turned me down.
Ironside: A tyrant can never accept someone else's suggestion, no matter how good it is.

Ed: I thought I turned that thing off.
Mark: You did, just before you got turned off.
Ironside: We just made another recording of her voice. I want the sound lab to make a comparative analysis of the two.
Ed: Mmm. All things being equal, her voice quality should be the same on both.
Ironside: Unless Carolyn White is telling the truth.
Ed: How do we determine that?
Ironside: We deduce, determine and decide. It's called detective work.

District Attorney Layton: You conduct during this investigation isn't helping matters.
Ironside: What do you mean by that?
District Attorney Layton: You've been biased in her behalf from the very beginning.
Ironside: Layton, that's a lie.
District Attorney Layton: Oh come off it, Ironside. Everybody knows she's an old friend of yours.
Ironside: It wouldn't matter is she was a complete stranger or my little old grandmother. She'd still get the same shake.
District Attorney Layton: Commissioner, you have the reports on the Chief's preliminary interrogations. You can see for yourself that they have put me at a serious disadvantage.
The Commissioner: Why didn't you notify her immediately that she was a suspect, inform her of her rights?
Ironside: Because I chose not to.
District Attorney Layton: Your touching faith in Mrs. White may just get half our brief thrown right out of court. She told you she had a gun, she told you she went to Jason's office. Now both of those statements were self-incriminating.
Ironside: I'd say her rights were never violated.
The Commissioner: Bob, you're close to her, very close. Maybe it would be better if you laid off the case.
Ironside: Commissioner, I've been bending rules and busting criminals for 20 years on this force. If my honesty and my methods can't be trusted any more, maybe it's time to quit.

Eve: I'm still a woman and my instincts tell me that there is something wrong with the way she's taking this whole thing.
Ironside: Women's instincts are what make them the world's lousiest detectives.

Ironside: Easy think. Simple conclusions based on obvious facts.
Eve: What is it you want us to think?
Ironside: Everything. Keep all the possibilities alive, but don't jump to any conclusions 'til you have all the facts.
Ed: Are you still playing with the idea Jason White's alive?
Ironside: I'm playing with the idea that this is all too easy. And Carolyn White is not a stupid woman.
Eve: And it's your educated opinion that she's innocent.
Ironside: I'm not interested in educated opinions, yours or mine. I want the truth. The pure hard to find truth.
Eve: And I suppose it's up to us to find it for you.
Ironside: Now that is an intelligent piece of deductive reasoning.
