Ironside: Downhill All the Way

Episode Quotes
Mr. Amati: What happened here?
Mark: Well you could say the election campaign has just been shot to pieces.

Ironside: Hello, Jerry. Funny thing. Corners are more complicated than people think. I haven't really looked at a corner in years. You know, I'm glad I came to see you. I'd like you to come visit me, Jerry. I told some friends of mine about you and they'd like to meet you. Would you like to come with me and visit them?

Dr. Ian Rice: Couldn't it have been an accident?
Ironside: No, Ian, they wanted to kill him. One crippled cop didn't seem that much of an obstacle. Who's afraid of a crippled cop? You handle his mother for me?
Dr. Ian Rice: Of course.
Ironside: Where can I change?
Dr. Ian Rice: Right here, I'm a doctor, I've seen a naked man before.
Ironside: You're a good friend, Ian.
Dr. Ian Rice: Maybe next time I park in a tow-away zone, you'll remember that.

Commissioner Randall: I don't know how to say this to you, so I'll get right to the point. Flat out without fancy language I think you've been working too hard. How does a vacation sound, uh? Take a month off, relax, two months if you like.
Ironside: Dennis, we've been friends for a long time, you've backed me on some pretty long shots. I want you to go along with me this time.
Commissioner Randall: Well, I'm only asking you to take a vacation.
Ironside: You didn't let me finish. I've had it, Dennis, I'm resigning.
Commissioner Randall: Take your badge back. I refuse to accept your resignation.
Ironside: You have no choice in the matter. Somewhere in this department there is an information leak and whoever that pipeline feeds has already tried to kill a boy to stop him from talking to us. Now we only have two aces: they think the boy is dead and they don't know what he might have told me. So we've only one course of action left: we have to get those cards into the game and since I'm the only logical play there, I'm going underground.
Commissioner Randall: Be a cover. If we have to discredit you, nobody will believe us.
Ironside: But they might believe I quit because of depression over the death of a child. Ask Mark and Fran and Ed.
Commissioner Randall: A lot of people still won't understand.
Ironside: I'm not thinking of a lot of people, I'm thinking of a ten-year-old boy.
Commissioner Randall: And I'm thinking about you. It's a cold world out there. You'll be alone, old enemies surface quickly when they smell blood.
Ironside: Dennis, my mind is made.
Commissioner Randall: What about your staff? What happens to them when you're gone?
Ironside: That's up to you, whatever, they'll understand.

Ironside: Well, I guess that you've heard that I retired from the department some months ago. I settled in down here and I got thinking I might make a little extra money, supplement my pension, you know, by selling my life story. I don't want much for it, I just thought that maybe, well, you know, maybe...
Rogers: Yeah, we might be able to do something with that. I have to figure out the right format, you know. How about a drink?
Ironside: Oh, not right now, it's too early for me.
Rogers: So, uh, you have any ideas how to go about this?
Ironside: Actually, I do have a couple of ideas. You see I'm thinking of making a comeback.
Rogers: Good angle.
Ironside: I think so, too. Say, do you think--do you think you could give me a little advance? Not much, you understand.
Rogers: How would, uh, twenty strike you?
Ironside: That's generous of you. Very generous.
Rogers: You were, uh, telling me about a comeback was that it?
Ironside: That's right, right before I quit--ah, retired, there was this boy who was involved in an accident. Well, I've come up with a lead.

Wilson: The word is the old fox knows a lot more than he lets on. Yeah, he's half stoned all the time, too, so he never does any real work on it. I know what you mean, it could end up bad for both of us if he does know something and he knocks off the bottle. Yeah, I'll take care of it.
