Cultural References

Thomas Jefferson: Touch my niece; I’ll have George Washington chop off your cherry tree.

There is an old fable that historians believe to be untrue where George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and when asked about it, he declared that, "I cannot tell a lie," and admitted to it.

Gov. Croque: His is rather minute, my brother, is he not?
Jack: Are you kidding me? The real question is where does he stash his pot of gold?

They are referring Napoleon Bonaparte who was shorter than average and comparing him to a leprechaun of Irish lore. A leprechaun is a very short forest nymph that would guard a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
