was an Action, Adventure, Family oriented series that aired every Sunday on “NBC”
TV and each episode was 30 minutes long. The show revolved around the owner of a horse ranch by the name of “Sky King”
who not only owned a lot of horses but he also owned a small airplane named the “Songbird”
. The opening of the show you would hear an announcer say "From out of the clear blue of the western sky comes Sky King”
. The series began as a Radio program and was so popular it moved to the small screen with new stars playing the characters. Sky was a former WWII airplane pilot and his real full name was “Schuyler King”
. Sky lived with his niece “Penny King”
played by “Gloria Winters”
and his nephew “Clipper King”
played by “Ron Hagerthy”
. The 3 Kings’ lived on the “Flying Crown Ranch”
near the town of Grover, Arizona that was also near a top-secret Military base. Sky was like a self-appointed local law enforcement in the area so to speak and was secretly trying to protect the Military base from being found. His adventures took him all over the Arizona territory tracking bad guys and evil doers. His niece “Penny”
would also find herself getting into trouble every so often and needed “Sky”
to find her and to bring her back to the ranch.
The series ran on TV from 5 April 1952
to 8 March 1959
for a total of only 4 seasons. The last episode of the 1st season ended on 20 December 1952
but for some strange reason the series did not air again until 2 January 1956
which began the 2nd season. The 1st season had 19 episodes, the 2nd had 20, the 3rd had 19 and the 4th and final season had 13 episodes for a total of 71 episodes. It has been speculated over the years that one or more of the cast joined or was drafted into the Military, possibly “Kirby Grant”
who played "Sky"
himself which would explain the missing years the show didn’t air?
