A former St. Louis Cardinals baseball player turned sportswriter, Lucas Tanner loses his wife and child in a tragic car accident. He finally decides to start over as a high school teacher. He moves to Webster Groves, MO, and teaches English at the Harry S. Truman High School. There he has to deal with all the problems of high school students as well as the by-the-book principal Margaret Blumenthal. If that's enough, Tanner ends up helping to take care of Glendon Farrell, a young next-door boy who lives with his grandmother parents are out of the country, and eventually becomes a guidance counselor to the kids at Truman High.
