Episode Notes

First appearance: George Chandler as Petrie J. "Uncle Petrie" Martin from Millvale, Pennsylvania. Uncle Petrie filled the "old man" role once held by the deceased George Cleveland from the Miller Years. Petrie was dropped at the end of the 1958 season; some indicate it was simply a matter of finances and the producers were "cheap." At a later date, Andy Clyde would fill the "old man" role as Cully Wilson, an eccentric farmer and nature loving neighbor of the Martin family.

Uncle Petrie's friendship ring became a premium that fans could acquire after sending $.25 and a label from either a Swanson's TV dinner or a Swanson's meat pie. 77,000 rings were mailed to show fans and today the ring is a highly prized Lassie collectible.

Below: The Lassie Friendship Ring, ca. 1957. The ring is two-toned metal and adjustable. Lassie's monogram is found on either side of the central portrait.

According to Ruth, Timmy is "7 going on 8" in this episode.

Ruth reminds Paul he's a college graduate.

Episode Quotes

(Timmy is sitting at the supper table eating his dessert -- a big piece of pie. Lassie crosses the room and sits at his elbow.)

Timmy: (to Lassie) No, you can't have sweet stuff. It's bad for your teeth. The only reason I can have it is because I brush my teeth. And you can't brush.

(Lassie nudges Timmy's elbow and the pie on his fork falls to the floor. Lassie gobbles it up.)

Timmy: You did that on purpose! If you get a cavity, don't blame me ... and don't push my arm again!
