Living Single

Living Single

Living Single focuses on the personal and professional lives of six African American friends residing in New York City. Khadijah James (Queen Latifah) is the founder and editor of Flavor Magazine, an independent publication aimed at the young urban audience. She shares an apartment in a Brooklyn brownstone with her sweet-but-eccentric cousin Synclaire (Kim Coles), an aspiring actress who works as a receptionist at Flavor; and longtime friend Regine Hunter (Kim Fields), a materialistic woman with a knack for picking up gossip. The trio constantly receives unannounced visits from Khadijah's college friend Maxine Shaw (Erika Alexander), a strong-willed attorney who seems to have an aversion to purchasing her own groceries. Also occupying their fair share of time in the apartment are neighbor Overton Wakefield Jones (John Henton), a handyman who frequently offers homespun wisdom; and his best friend, Kyle Barker (T.C. Carson), a self-assured stock broker who is involved in a bizarre love-hate relationship with Max.

Following the fourth season, FOX failed to put the series on the fall schedule, but it was promoted from midseason status when the Scott Baio sitcom Rewind failed to impress and was cancelled before the first episode aired. T.C. Carson appeared in only a few episodes during this fifth (and final) season; and Mel Jackson joined the cast as Tripp Williams, an aspiring songwriter who moves in with Regine and Khadijah following Synclaire's marriage to Overton.

Recaps
1x10: Quittin' Time recap: The roommates are playing cards. Synclaire yells out, "Gin!" even though they are playing poker. Max arrives after a bad date (his credit card was declined). They invite her to hang out with them, and Regine insists, "When you hurt, we all hurt." The phone rings, and Regine answers it. She then tells the girls that she's leaving for a date, taking the whipped cream with her. She claims, "If I have a good time, we all have a good time.".. read more.

1x9: Just Friends? recap: The girls are gathering items to donate to a shelter. Max mocks Regine for donating some flashy clothing. Kyle and Overton arrive with their contributions. Kyle mocks the girls for hanging onto a Playgirl Magazine from 1987, and asks why they've kept it. "Page 54," Khadijah, Max and Regine reply in unison. Kyle finds that it has been ripped out. Synclaire is revealed to be the culprit. "I'm so ashamed," she gasps... read more.

1x8: Living Single... With Children recap: A weary Regine stumbles downstairs after noon in a bathrobe and shower cap. Khadijah notes that she must have had a good date, although Max argues that "it couldn't have been that good, or she wouldn't be waking up here." Regine discusses how wonderful it is to date a cultured man. Khadijah observes that Regine has undergone a lot of changes for Patrick, including attending museum exhibits and covering her breasts... read more.

1x7: Full Court Press recap: Kyle steps into the hallway and finds Overton trying to move a large table. 1x6: Great Expectations recap: On a typical Saturday night at the brownstone, Synclaire wonders if the Chinese have trouble eating with forks when they order American take-out, while Max peruses the TV Guide. Khadijah feels that they have fallen into a rut, and wants to go out for the evening. "I don't live here. I am out," Max argues. Khadijah believes that they need to go meet some men because "real men aren't just going to come knocking at the door." There is promptly a knock at the door. It is Overton and Kyle, who have come over to join the girls for Chinese food and TV. Khadijah insists that the girls will be going out, but opinion is divided on where they should go. Regine comes downstairs, and Max asks for her input. Regine says that she can get three people onto the guest list at Club Zina, as she is friends with the DJ. Max dismisses the idea, as she fears she will be surrounded by losers with gold teeth. Synclaire has only lukewarm interest. However, Max changes her mind after learning that Kyle wants to take her place. Kyle vows that he can get Overton and himself into the club... read more.
