Khadijah James, played by Queen Latifah

Khadijah James grew up in New Jersey, where she was raised by her single mother, Rita. Her estranged father, Ed, went on to have other children (including a track-star daughter, Stephanie) with whom Khadijah rarely spent time. She was a basketball star in high school, earning a berth in the city all-star game and winning the MVP award after scoring the winning basket. Khadijah graduated from Howard University and went on to serve an internship at Essence Magazine. She later moved to Brooklyn and started her own magazine, Flavor, which serves the young urban community. Although the magazine constantly faces financial problems, Khadijah battles to keep it afloat and maintain a standard of excellence. Khadijah has a strong, caring personality and is considered the "mother hen" of her group of friends. She was briefly engaged to a childhood friend, Terrence "Scooter" Williams, in 1995.
Synclaire James Jones, played by Kim Coles

Synclaire James was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, the only child of Clinton and Lilah James, and spent her earliest years there before the family made (as she puts it) the "big move" to Minneapolis. She continued to reside there until her early twenties, when she moved to New York to live with cousin Khadijah and work as receptionist at her magazine while also taking classes in her spare time. She began to pursue an interest in acting after starring in a small play written by one of her night-school classmates, and eventually found success. Synclaire began dating Overton Wakefield Jones in 1994, and they wed in 1997. She has a bright, cheerful (though naive) personality, and often comforts friends with the expression "woo-woo-woo." She has a collection of troll dolls (including a giant troll named Crispus Attucks) and a hamster named Robespierre.
Maxine Felice "Max" Shaw, played by Erika Alexander

Maxine Felice "Max" Shaw grew up in Philadelphia, the only daughter of her doctor father and ambitious attorney mother, Nina, with whom she always had a distant relationship. She has one brother. Max showed varied interests while growing up, starring as the Rat King in a production of The Nutcracker in elementary school and making it to the state championship game as a member of her high school's volleyball team. She attended Howard University, where she became best friends with Khadijah James. Known for her acid tongue and strong, argumentative personality, she became an attorney and worked for the firm of Evans and Bell in New York City. Following her suspension for giving unsolicited advice about prenuptial agreements, she returned to find that she had lost her office and cases, and chose to quit. After a few months of unemployment, she was hired by the public defender's office after successfully defending herself following an arrest during a short stint working for a telemarketer who turned out to be crooked. Max lived with basketball player Greg for several years until he "packed up his raggedy duffle bag and left," leaving Max heartbroken and very bitter toward men. Max lived with Khadijah and Regine Hunter for a month before taking an apartment across the street from their place. However, she spends most of her time hanging out at Khadijah's apartment and raiding the refrigerator. She also constantly engages in insults and games of one-upsmanship with their neighbor, Kyle Barker, whom she eventually dates.
Regine Hunter, played by Kim Fields

Regine Hunter grew up in New Jersey to a single mother, Laverne. She became best friends with Khadijah James and spent much of her time at her house while her mother worked extra jobs to make ends meet. Regine later moved in with Khadijah due to the influence of her mother, a fact that Regine only learned years later during an appearance with her roommates on a talk show. A devotée of fashion, Regine worked as a buyer for a boutique. After the boutique was purchased by a man who converted it to a bargain store, Regine met a customer who helped her land a new gig as wardrobe assistant for the popular soap opera Palo Alto. Following the show's cancellation a year later, she started her own business as coordinator of weddings and other events. Through one such event she met Dexter Knight, to whom she became engaged in 1997. Although Regine is close to Khadijah and her cousin Synclaire, she has a prickly relationship with Khadijah's other best friend, Maxine Shaw, and they frequently butt heads. Regine is known for her love of gossip and has an impressive collection of wigs.
Overton Wakefield Jones, played by John Henton

Overton Wakefield Jones was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Otis and Odelle Jones. He has a younger sister, Olivia. Overton attended Carver High School, where he played basketball. He later graduated from the DeVry Institute. He left Cleveland after his girlfriend, Melody, rejected his marriage proposal at a Cleveland Browns game. He immediately moved to New York, where he became the handyman at the Brooklyn brownstone where Khadijah James resides. He has a natural ability to fix things, and likes hanging out at the hardware store. Overton became smitten with Khadijah's cousin, Synclaire, upon her arrival from Minneapolis. The two did not begin dating for several years, but later married. Overton often gives advice to his friends in the form of stories about his colorful extended family. He is a devoted fan of the Cleveland Browns (who broke his heart by moving to Baltimore) and Ohio State University football.
Kyle Barker [S01-S04; episodes 106-107, 118], played by T.C. Carson

Kyle Barker was born in 1965 and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He has a younger brother, Damon. Kyle grew up as best friends with Overton Jones. He was bullied at Carver High School due to his husky frame of the time, but scored a 1420 on his SAT. Kyle showed off his skill with numbers by doing his parents' taxes at an early age. He also developed an interest in singing, and showed off his voice as part of a group called Water (named for the missing element in Earth, Wind & Fire). After earning an advanced degree, Kyle moved to New York, where he shared an apartment with Overton and found success as a stock broker. He briefly dated neighbor Regine Hunter, but later had a more intense relationship with Maxine Shaw, his frequent verbal sparring partner. Kyle has an avid interest in Africa, and earned praise at work for opening up investments with the continent. He is 5'10" and weighs 170 pounds.
Ira Lee "Tripp" Williams III [S05], played by Mel Jackson (1)

Ira Lee Williams III, a.k.a. Tripp, moved in with Khadijah James and Regine Hunter after their roommate, Synclaire James, got married and moved to another apartment in the building. He had previously crashed on the couch of friend Russell Montego, the music editor for Khadijah's magazine. Tripp works as a jingle writer to pay the bills, but aspires to make it big as a songwriter. He once wrote a song called "Missing Out on You" that achieved chart success, but lost the rights to an unscrupulous producer. Tripp has difficulty winning over Regine, and often tries to impress her by sharing his contacts from the music industry, including R&B singer Montell Jordan. He is an excellent cook.
