Lou finds himself in a quandary doing night-duty for the first time and a ship is reported sunk. Lou reports it and adds that the cops suspect the ship was used as a gambling den. Mrs Pynchon, a friend of the ship's owner, Geoffrey McAdam, denies the charge vehemently and sets out to prove it. Meanwhile, Billie learns that the ship was deliberately sunk and that McAdam's son is involved.
Lou has a hot story on his hands when a ship sinks the night he stands In for night editor Kendall, who has had an accident.
In Nightside, the peace and quiet of the office is broken when news of the sinking of the Almatoss, owned by Geoffrey Adam, is heard.
Things get rather interesting when Billie comes up with a lead that a bomb had caused the sinking. Mrs Pynchon Is also taking a special interest in the case because Adam is a friend of hers.
Donovan is assigned to talk to Adam's son to see if he has any idea who would have motives for sabotaging the ship.
