Episode Notes

This is the one and only time you see the character Nozomu Nikaido of room 2, who was in the original manga but never made it into the animated series.

Released in February of 1988 the original release was meant to be a double feature paired with the the Urusei Yatsura Kanketsu-hen movie, the wildly popular breakthough hit also by Rumiko Takahashi.

Yagami impersonating Lum:

Lum is one of the main characters of Urusei Yatsura and is an anime icon. Even fans of today recognize her image. Lum is an alien princess with green hair, a tiger-striped bikini, knee-high boots and horns. Lum is in love with her 'darling' Ataru and with often toss herself at him, knocking him over. It's a running gag of the series. Hence when Yagami impersonated Lum she said "Darling, I love you." as she threw herself at Godai.

Analysis

Kanketsuhen:

The 'final chapter' turns out not to be so final. Not only was the OAV released 2 years after the movie but the actually movie is set during the events of last episode. In fact the last episode offers more of a proper conclusion to the series then the movie, showing the main characters 1 year after the wedding.

The purpose of movie was more to revisit the characters one last time rather then to conclude the series, or to be a 'final chapter'. One last gasp for fans of the series.

The Room Numbers (Part 3):

0 (the manager's room) = Kyoko Otonashi
1 = Ichinose, 'Ichi' is the word for one.
2 = Nozomu Nikaido = 'Ni' is the word for two.
3 = (Vacant)
4 = Yotsuya
5 = Yusaku Godai
6 = Akemi Roppongi

Oddly enough (see the episode notes above) that while Mitsukoshi had no connection to the original manga from which the original series was based, the writers still followed Takahashi's method of naming characters in keeping the room number in the name.
