Mama reluctantly agrees to let her son Vint and his two children move back in after they are evicted from their apartment. This creates problems for Fran though and she eventually threatens to move out.
Mama is furious when she discovers that her next door neighbor, Naomi, who used to be friends with Vint in high school, spent the night with Vint after one of their dates. But her mood soon changes when Vint and Naomi announce that they're getting married and moving to Arizona to run a trailer park.
While Vint and Buzz are off at a bachelor party, Mama and a few of her friends get into a huge argument after all becoming drunk.
After an interesting and odd wedding day, Vint and Naomi are finally married. They decide to take the kids with them after all, which leaves Mama to enjoy the peace and quiet of her house once again. The silence is short lived though when Vint and Naomi come back and tell Mama that they have to move back in because the job that they would've gotten in Arizona was a scam.
Mama ruins the family's chances at winning $10,000 on Family Feud causing the whole family to become upset with her.
Mama and Eunice land themselves in jail with a hooker when they hit two police officers after getting into an argument about one of Eunice's past loves.
At Naomi's suggestion, Mama tries to find a job after getting tired of having done nothing with her life. She finds a job as a secretary for a travel agency but soon finds herself fired when home life starts to interfere with her work life.
Buzz and Sonya complain about Vint's curfew of midnight for a school event, but later agree when Buzz's date dumps him and Sonya discovers that her date has a midnight curfew himself.
Mama is excited when she is invited out on numerous dates by an old boyfriend from 40 years ago. But her excitement soon turns to disappointment when they both discover that not as much changes over 40 years as you would hope.
Fran and Vint have reason to be upset with Mama after she burns a hole in Fran's favorite dress with an iron and forgets to make dinner early and iron Vint's lucky yellow shirt because she is rushing to get to a hair parlor appointment.
Vint almost goes through with a scheme where he could make $1600 by pretending to be married to a girl from Portugal in need of a green card until he gets a little talk from Mama where she explains that he could get a felony if he agrees to the deal.
Eunice is complaining about how her life is turning out causing everyone around her to start to feel the same way. But when Eunice gets a hold of one of Buzz's positive thinking tapes, it skyrockets her life to new happiness and she soon lands a small but important part in a play, that is until she quits at Mama's suggestion.
Mama has a hard time forgiving Vint when he pawns her favorite set of silver for $250 to bust his friend Claude, who Mama believes is a bum, out of jail.
Buzz and Sonya are in charge of the dance that's supposed to raise money to save the school gym from destruction. They soon strike upon the idea of doing a 1940's theme night, but it's rejected in favor of a modern punk band (Medication). Things though don't go as planned and it's Mama to the rescue and the event ends up being a 40's them night anyway
When her (now) millionaire ex-husband (Leonard Oates) returns to Raytown to try and win her back, Naomi must decide what she wants: money and a life of ease in Tallahassee, Florida with the worm king or true love with Vint and his crazy family.
Vint's bowling ball is missing and while the family goes about searching for it, Ellen, arrives with news. She's been named 'Raytown Woman of the Year' and a banquet dinner has been planned in her honor at the country club. A dinner that Mayor Tutwiller took the liberty to invite Mama and the family too.
The news of a potentially new addition to the already crowded Harper household has everyone in an uproar. Though Naomi hasn't even confirmed that she is indeed with child, the squabbling members of the clan are arguing over plans of where the new arrival is gonna go.
Mama's day of fixing gooseberry jam with Ellen, Eunice and Naomi takes a turn for the worse when a fight over the pot ends with Mama getting whacked in the head. Later, at the hospital, Vint tries to unravel the truth as he listens to three very versions of the same story.
Naomi's friendly overtures to the customers at Food Circus may have led to her being harrassed by a perverted obscene caller. Something that Mama suggests until the caller talks to her the same way. The family soon realizes that it's less about Naomi's attitude that they first thought.
The recently divorced Ellen has moved on from her broken marriage into the arms of another man. A much younger, very handsome man that Mama and the family have a big problem with. Mama just can't see how a daughter of hers could go after a man so much younger, though Ellen sees it very differently (a societal double standard).
Mama pays a visit to her favorite Aunt, Gert, and finds the poor woman is a shell of her former self. The retirement home she's been stuck in has drained the life out of her. So Mama, in her own unique way, sets about changing Gert's life for the better and tries to get her back into the swing of things.
Vint's night of fun with the family takes a turn when he's invited on stage at the Bigger Jigger to compete in a talent show. A show which he promptly wins and goes on to think he's now a new star. It's then up to Mama, in her own way, to bring her youngest offspring back to earth.
Naomi and Vint want to invite their friends over for a dinner party at the house. Planning for Mama, Buzz, Sonya and Fran to go out to the movies. Problems arise when Mama suffers a back spasm and ends up on the living room floor unable to movie. Making her, now, the center of the party, whether anyone likes that fact or not.
Mama's constant need to be hauled around has everyone in the family trying to convince her to learn to drive. When that fails, the family refuses to take her anywhere else and Fran is finally successful in getting her behind the wheel. An event that propels Mama to get her own license and that means a long day at the DMV.
Mama scoffs at the idea of self-defense when Fran, Naomi and Sonya enroll in a karate class. But her mind changes when she's mugged and made to feel week and helpless. Mama soon joins the other ladies of the family in learning to defend themselves. A class that pays of when the same mugger attacks again.
Now that she has her license,Mama's in need of a car all her own. Fortunately, Vint comes across an ad in the paper featuring the dealership of one of the Harper's old neighbors, Willie Potts. So naturally Mama figures he'll give her a peachy deal and eventually she does get one. Though it's more lemony than peachy.
Naomi's job as the fast lane check out girl is put at risk when Mama's hired on as an employee at Food Circus. 'Ask Thelma' is an immediate hit and impresses the manager so much that he insists Mama take over Naomi's job to learn more about the business of a supermarket. In the process demoting Naomi back down to bagger.
Naomi and Vint's 1st anniversary has them heading out of town to the Wandering Hearts motel for a stay. Problems arise when Aunt Effie cons Mama into coming out to Cecil Town to help her. It's soon revealed though that Effie wasn't being honest and Mama walks out on her and ends up at the motel with Vint and Naomi.
Mama's frustration with Raytown's rather useless boob of a Mayor leads her to make some public comments that are not to flattering. Making Ellen increasingly frantic as the public rallies around Mama and encourages her to run against Mayor Tutwiller in the upcoming election.
Mama's shocking election in the mayorial election has her now having to learn the ways of political office and the learning curb is steep to say the least. Before long it's clear that Mama has gotten in over her head and turns to the person who she'd just defeated in the election to save her.
Mama's misuse of Naomi's NEW vaccum cleaner ends up burning a hole in the living room rug that's been in the Harper family for decades. Resulting in dueling lawsuits. When the two do get their day in court they drive the judge so insane that he's hard pressed to have a clear thought let alone make a rational decision.
Mama's birthday wish is that the family help her clean out the attic. No dice though as everyone has excuses, except Buzz, who is the only volunteer. This does give Mama a chance to relay the story of her 30th birthday, which featured Carl (Mr. Harper) and his quest for a promotion that was never to be.
Mama's brother-in-law, Uncle Roy returns to Raytown after a nearly two decade absence to visit his brother, Carl. Of course Roy has no clue that his brother has been dead for 11 years. Everyone (except Mama) is thrilled when Roy decides to stay for a while. A visit that awakens feelings in Mama that she's afraid to admit.
Meanwhile, with Roy's encouragement, Sonya enters a beauty pageant.
Fran is asked by the Editor of her paper to fill in for the advice columnist. Though she tries hard, it's Mama's home spun (simple) advice that in the end is the big winner in the eyes of the Editor. Which forces Fran to enter negotiations with Buzz for Mama's services full time.
Mama's plea for someone to go with her to visit Carl's grave falls on deaf ears. Though once there she makes a discovery that will force the entire family to visit. It seems that the late Mr. Harper is buried beside another woman and he wasn't supposed to be. That spot was reserved for Mama.
Mama's has to deal with the death of her sister, Franny, and the arrival of Eunice and Ed's troublesome son, Bubba. The first of which came as a surprise, Franny died at the Bigger Jigger, and the second is also a surprise.
Mama and the family get a major surprise when it's revealed that Franny (Thelma's late sister) had an estate valued at $35,000 dollars. But Mama can only get the money if she can go two full weeks without losing her temper.
Ellen stops by with a gift for Mama and an apology for missing her Aunt Fran's funeral. Though it falls on deaf ears until the news comes that Ellen is going under the knife. Prompting Mama and the family to descend on the hospital...chaos soon ensues.
After Mama goes to visit Aunt Effie in the hospital, she gets so outraged about the care Effie’s receiving following her concussion that she decides to take her home to recover, much to the displeasure of the rest of the family. During Effie’s two week stay with the Harper’s, she promptly starts getting on everybody’s nerves, mainly because of Mama’s strict rules to aid in Effie’s recovery. When it looks like Effie’s stay didn’t help in her recovery, she starts talking again and is able to be discharged from the hospital.
While on vacation in Hawaii, Mama, Iola, and Bubba hope to find love. Meanwhile, Vint causes Naomi to get severely sunburned when he accidentally puts bath gel on her back instead of sunscreen while preoccupied with the pretty girl sunbathing next to him.
Mama tries to find her an Aloha Hula Lamp to take home as a souvenir. Meanwhile, after accidentally being mistaken for a stock market insider while playing golf, Vint gives three men advice that triples their earnings within two hours.
Several weeks after having a corn removed from her toe, Mama’s been having her family wait on her hand and foot. When she soon discovers that nobody will be at home to do everything she wants since there’s a dance contest at the Raytown Ballroom, Mama reluctantly goes along with Vint, Naomi, Bubba, and Iola. Eventually an old friend of Mama’s named Ramon walks over to her and convinces her to enter the contest with him. By the end of the contest, Mama and Ramon is one of three finalists in the contest and are selected to do a dirty dance to determine the winner. Needless to say, by the time the evening is done, Naomi and Vint are less than thrilled at losing the contest to Mama and her dance partner.
When Naomi and Vint return from a friend’s mobile home with news that they saw a psychic, Bubba and Iola become impressed that a psychic is doing business in Raytown and soon become ecstatic when Naomi tells them they invited her over to their house for a reading. While Madame Rita promptly impresses Iola and almost all of the Harper family, Mama suspects the psychic is a phony out to make a quick buck. When Vint brings Madame Rita home for their most recent reading, Mama decides to take matters into her hand and prove to her family that the psychic is just reciting gossip that she heard at work.
Tension's become heated when Mama and Iola get in to a contest for a rose competition. What will be the outcome?
Mama has concocked a scheme to try to get the bank to pay her some money after an accident she has.
Mama is in an investigating mood. It is revealed that she has a love of watching detective moods so the premise of the episode revolves around Mama pretending to be a detective in a movie to discover Iola's missing mom.
In the series finale, Naomi goes into labor and Mama has to deliver the Harper's newest family member.
