Bret Maverick [Seasons 1-3], played by James Garner
The main hero of the show. Brother of Bart and Brent Maverick. Son of Beauregard "Pappy" Maverick to whom he bears a strong resemblance. A gambler who prefers to live by his wits rather than his fists or his gun. Though he's a crafty one, Bret frequently seems to get out-witted by females and often has to call upon brother Bart to get him out of trouble. Departed the show for parts unknown after Season Three and was rarely mentioned again although he did turn up years later in a revival series that aired in the early 1980's. In the revival series, Bret gave up his days of wandering and settled down at a ranch he won in a poker game. He named this ranch the Lazy Ace. |
