Episode Notes
Diane Brewster makes her first of several appearances on the show in the recurring role of con woman Samantha Crawford. Ms. Brewster had earlier played the character on an episode of Cheyenne.

Jay Novello would return in Plunder of Paradise, The Day They Hanged Bret Maverick, and The Marquesa.

Ted de Corsia would return in Diamond Flush and The Money Machine.

The first two Pappyisms of the series are spouted by Bret in this episode.

Bret wears a light brown suit in this episode instead of his usual black one.

Episode Quotes
Pappyism #1: Man's the only animal you can skin more than once.

Pappyism #2: A faint heart never filled a flush.

Riggs: Now that I see you, I can add two and two together.
Bret: It'll never come out four. Not the way you deal.

Bart: You're a bad poker player, Miss Crawford.
Samantha: I expected you to be a good loser.
Bret: No one likes to lose.
Samantha: Especially to a woman?

Bret: New Orleans, a real fine place to be when you have some money in your pocket. I hadn't.

Riggs: You're not a very careful talker.
Bret: But careful who sits in a game with me.

Samantha:It's a man's world. The men make the rules. I haven't any objection to that as long as they abide by them equally.

Cross: (to Samantha) You aced yourself right down the river, honey.

Bret: The journey from St. Louis to Wyoming is long and rough. But mostly just long.

McComb: (about Samantha) She's got to be Irish with a face like that. She's an angel but an angel.
Bret: Play poker with her sometime.

Bret: You know, Samantha, it's kinda hard keepin' track of you.

Analysis
In this episode, the show began to add elements of humor which would be its trademark for the remainder of its run. It also set the precedent for a Maverick to be be-deviled and at times out-witted by a conniving female. We also meet for the first time one Samantha Crawford (played by Diane Brewster) who would be a recurring nemesis for both Maverick brothers during the show's first season. One wishes that Ms. Brewster had stayed with the series for its entire run.
