Episode Notes

This episode is a straight dramatic episode with almost no elements of comedy. As the series progressed, Jack Kelly tended to get the most of the solo scripts that were dramatic in nature with the more comic ones going to James Garner.

Kitty Stillman definitely ranks as one of the most psychotic females either Maverick brother encountered in the series.

Patricia Barry would return in Two Beggars on Horseback.

Barry Kelley would return in One of Our Trains is Missing.

John Alderson would return in Benefit of the Doubt, The Art Lovers, and Mr. Muldoon's Partner.

Bart: I promised Pappy I'd never take a drink or a steady job.

Bart: (to Kitty about poker) In some of the games I get into it's dangerous enough to win honestly.

Clerk: (about Bart's horse) Want me to feed him too? I got some nice pickled herring in the wagon.
Bart: He just had a turkey sandwich.

Bart: (to Kitty) I'm not well enough to lick my weight in wildcats. I never tried to .

Kitty: You can tip your hat and ride off just like that?
Bart: It's the only thing I can do.

Bart: (to Stillman) I'm no hunter. I'm not even a very good shot.

Spender: (about Stillman) Is he dead?
Bart: Yes.
Spender: So are you.

Sheriff: (to Bart) I wouldn't believe you, mister, if you was on your knees in church.

Kitty: (about Bart's beating) What happened?
Bart: For every friend Pete had I've got an enemy.

Kitty: (to Bart) Sooner or later you'll have to turn to me because there won't be anybody else to turn to as long as you live.

Bart: I'm not a violent man, Kitty. I couldn't afford to kill you now even if I wanted to.

Analysis

One of the grimmest episodes of the series. There's no real happy ending. Just Bart riding out of town after narrowly averting get strung up at the hands of a lynch mob. All due to the machinations of an unhinged damsel. The script here isn't bad it's just not your typical Maverick fare. Perhaps it was originally meant for another Warner Brothers series like Cheyenne or Bronco.
