Episode Quotes
Pappyism: When you're playing poker don't trust anybody. Especially your brother.

Bret: If you'll excuse us, please, I think my brother's gonna be sick. If he isn't, I am.

Bart: Bret, sometimes your heart runs away with your head.

Jessamy: You don't like sour mash?
Bart: If i wanted another bad habit, I don't think that'd be it.

Bart: (to Jessamy) I don't know what you have in mind but you're speaking my language--greed.

Bart: (upon seeing Bret and Jessamy together) Jesse, couldn't you even wait 'til I borrowed the money?

Jessamy: I'm really sorry, Bart, but....
Bart: I know. Business is business.

Jessamy: What happened to the horse?
Bret: I was robbed.
Jessamy: By who?
Bret: Robbers.

Bret: (about Bart) Don't tell me they robbed him too.
Jessamy: No, I did.

Bret: We don't start makin' better time than this we might as well pull over and waive to Bart as he goes galloping by.
Jessamy: But I told you he's on foot.
Bart: You have more faith in a simple matter than I have. If there's a horse within a 100 miles Bart's on it by now.

Bart: (whacks Sundown over the head) Jesse, we got too many partners already.

Bart: (about him and Bret) You see, Jesse, the one thing we don't do is kill each other.

Bret: (to Stryker) By the way, you didn't give me the time of day but don't bother. I probably couldn't afford it.

Bret: (after Stryker has returned with Bart and Jessamy) It's nice work, Stryker. You see what you can do when you really put your mind to it?

Bart: What are you thinkin' now?
Bret: I'm thinkin' you're awful lucky not to be an only child.

Analysis
Simply put, this episode is a classic. It's no wonder that Jack Kelly listed it as his favorite of the series. The relationship between the Maverick brothers is explored in a little more depth in this episode as they have to race each other (and a crafty damsel) to cash a check and run into outlaws and hostile Native Americans along the way. If you could put an episode of Maverick in a time capsule for future generations you would have to give strong consideration to choosing Two Beggars on Horseback. If any episode represents what made Maverick a classic TV series it's this one.
