Episode Notes

It's a shame that this episode marks the only appearance of the series by Connie Stevens as the character of Frankie French. Stevens and James Garner had real chemistry together but she was soon cast in Hawaiian Eye and never again appeared on Maverick.

Adam West would later star in Batman. He would return in Pappy.

Episode Quotes

Pappyism #1: There's three reasons why most men do anything: greed, curiousity, and anger.

Pappyism #2: A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only one. A thousand to one is a pretty big advantage.

Frankie: Well, well, so this is Ten Strike. San Francisco's got nothin' to worry about.

Hotel clerk: (about Frankie's luggage) What's she got in all them hatboxes?
Bret: That's something to think about, isn't it?

Frankie: (to Bret) The way you carry on you'd think you never had a bath in your life.

Frankie: I only have $2.50 to my name.
Bret: Correction, you have $1.50 to your name.

Bret: Frankie, let's get one thing straight. I haven't had my coffee yet and I don't wanna talk. And I won't wanna talk after I've had my coffee.

Bret: You mean you got $100 in this note before you came to Ten Strike and you only have $1.50 left?
Frankie: I bought some hats! I always buy some hats when I'm confused.
Bret: I believe it. I've seen some of 'em.

Mae: No luck tonight?
Bret: Ma'am, luck's got nothin' to do with poker.
Mae: Then I was right, you are a professional.
Bret: Just a serious student. It beats workin'.

Frankie: (to Scott) I don't care if a man's got money as long as he's got character.

Scott: (to Frankie) You have a wonderful gift for simplification, my dear.

Frankie: Big talk but you don't scare me if greed, curiousity, and anger's the only things tht get you goin'.
Bret: It's possible that Pappy left something out.

Bret: If you think I'm in bad shape you should see the other two.
Frankie: I didn't know you landed a punch.
Bret: I don't mean tonight. I mean tomorrow night.

Mae: (to Bret) The folks in this town blame me for just about everything from wandering husbands to smallpox. Wanna blame something, blame Mae Miller.

Scott: I'm an old man, Mr. Maverick, not an old fool.

Bret: ( to Frankie) Did you ever hear of a scared jackrabbit asking a friend along?

Frankie: I'm so glad to see you. I just knew you couldn't run out on me.
Bret: Well, I tried.

Analysis

James Garner, as Bret Maverick, had numerous on-screen romances during the course of the series but the co-star with whom he had the most chemistry was Connie Stevens seen here in Two Tickets to Ten Strike. It's a shame this episode marked Stevens' only appearance of the series. We can only speculate as to what might have been.
