| If you only view the premiere episode of the series, "War of the Silver Kings", you'll see almost nothing that made Maverick a classic television series. It began as just another routine straight Western. Nothing that really stood out from the flock of Westerns that permeated television at that time. But beginning with the third episode "According to Hoyle" things began to change. The writers began adding elements of humor to the series. Maverick gradually became a show that parodied the Western genre itself (though always in a respectful manner).
Besides adding humor, the biggest change in the series came in episode #8 "Hostage" when Jack Kelly joined the series as the hero's brother, Bart. Kelly would continue with the show for the remainder of its run and his episodes would usually alternate from week to week with those starring James Garner. | |
