In this premiere episode, architect Wilbur Post and his smokin' hot wife, Carol, buy a house in the country to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. On the property is a barn which contains a palomino stallion who suddenly begins talking to Wilbur, telling him that his name is Mister Ed. When Wilbur informs his wife and neighbors that his horse can talk they all think he's losing his marbles because the horse won't speak in their presence.
Ed almost ruins things for Wilbur when he tries to get his master a contract to design a clubhouse.
Wilbur gets a bit jealous when wife Carol suddenly appears to be ignoring him and decides to make her pay more attention to him. With Ed's "help", of course.
When the Addisons and Posts take a vacation without Ed, he leaves and starts a new life as a kiddie ride in an amusement park. It's up to Wilbur to persuade his horse to return home.
Mister Ed gets on Carol's bad side with his antics but when Wilbur defends him he ends up sleeping in the barn.
Wilbur agrees to let a sorority house at a local college use Ed as a mascot but then he gets kidnapped by a rival sorority.

At an animal auction, Ed discovers that his mother has been used as a plow horse on a farm so her persuades Wilbur to purchase her.
