Cultural References

It's Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Famous Deaths):
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, 1756-1791, began as a child prodigy and maintaining his productivity until his death; he remains perhaps the most renowned and revered figures in European Classical music.
  • St. Stephen: The first martyr among Jesus’ disciples, he was stoned to death for blasphemy.
  • Genghis Khan: Late 12th, early 13th century Mongolian emperor; cause of death is uncertain.
  • King Richard III of England was the last of the Plantagenet dynasty and the last King of England to die in combat, dying in the Battle of Bosworth field.
  • Jean d’Arc, or Joan of Arc as she is more commonly know, died at the age of 19. Executed for heresy and burned at the stake, her trial was posthumously viewed as a grievous error and politically motivated. She has since been beatified and sainted by the Catholic Church.
  • Jean-Paul Marat was a key figure in the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror (beheading aristocrats and anyone not in line with the revolution), and was murdered in his bath (due to a skin condition, he spent much of his time in the bath) by Charlotte Corday, who was also mentioned by Eric in this sketch. You can see the historic scene as portrayed by Paul Jacques AimĂ© Baudry.
  • Everyone knows Abraham Lincoln, sixteenth President of the United States, who is famous for his having been assassinated while at the theatre.
  • King Edward VII didn’t have a particularly glorious death, and died of a heart attack in Buckingham Palace.
  • Honourable mention was given to Admirable Nelson, who is perhaps the most famed naval personnel in the history of Britain, if not the world. He died in the Battle of Trafalgar, and has since been commemorated with Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, London.

Italian Lesson: The man in class breaks out into song, which is 'Quando Caliente del Sol'.
