Shinji Ikari, a 14-year-old boy, has been summoned by his father to Neo Tōkyō 3 for a purpose, which will only be revealed to Shinji when he arrives at his father's place of work. While waiting for Misato Katsuragi, the woman who will drive him to see his father, Shinji becomes caught in the middle of an intense battle between the United Nations and a massive creature. Able to escape with his escort, Shinji is taken to NERV, a secret agency that lies deep beneath the streets of Tōkyō 3. Within its massive walls is the last hope for mankind: Evangelion.

| The orange fluid that fills the entry plug of Eva Unit 01 is called LCL by the operator. LCL is an acronym for Link Connection Liquid. The true reason that LCL is used to connect the Evas with the pilots will be mentioned in later episodes.

ADV's Translation Error #1:
With the Platinum Edition, ADV retranslated "Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis", the intro to the series, in order to make it more accurate than the original "karaoke" translation on the older DVDs. Unfortunately, they made the mistake of "correcting" the translation for the word 'Aoi'. The line in Japanese reads "Aoi Kaze ga ima/Mune no Door o Tataite mo". ADV changed the word 'Aoi' from 'blue' to 'inexperienced', which completely changes the meaning of the line. However, the kanji for 'Aoi' that is used in the Japanese lyrics is蒼い which means 'blue' or 'pale'. There is another kanji character that reads as Aoi which does mean 'blue' and 'inexperienced', 青い. However, it is the former kanji that is used in the lyrics and not the latter.
