Bob Newhart returns to television after a four year absence to star in
Newhart. Dick Loudon (Newhart), a New York writer ("How-to" books), moves to Norwich, Vermont with his wife Joanna to take over and renovate an old inn from the early 1770s. George Utley is the handyman who's family has been there as long as the Stradford Inn has been open. Leslie is the maid (first season), and a student at Vermont University who is also training to be an Olympic skier. She is replaced as maid by her cousin Stephanie, a rich brat who took the job after leaving her husband. Kirk Devane owned the Minuteman Cafe next door to the Stradford, and is a habitual liar. He left the show during season 2 and it was sold to Larry, Darryl and Darryl, three dirty, grimy brothers who live in a nearby cabin. In later years, Dick becomes host of his own talk show on a local TV station, and his manager, Michael Harris, becomes Stephanie's boyfriend.
