The Last Laurel - Recap

Crippled former decathlon champion Marius Davis is in his room, surrounded by his trophies. His wife Susan arrives with Marius’ doctor, Armstrong. Marius rudely orders her out and Armstrong asks why he was summoned thirty miles on a stormy night, and is trapped on the island for the night. Marius accuses Armstrong of stealing his wife, and says that he will deal with the affair in his own unique fashion. He then orders Armstrong to bring Susan in. Marius informs her that the doctor is trapped there for the night, and will be in the room across from the hallway while Marius is trapped in his bed. He orders them both out of his sight and they leave.



In the hallway, Susan apologizes to Armstrong, explaining that Marius is consumed by jealousy, and Armstrong is simply the most recent of a series of imagined lovers. She talks about how when she woke up before dawn, she thought she saw Marius walking out of her room. Armstrong assures her that Marius is unable to move, but she isn’t convinced.

Later, Marius lies in his bed and thinks of how he’s learned how to project his consciousness out of his body through sheer will. His astral self leaves his body and goes to find Susan’s scissors and stab Armstrong. Marius will have the perfect alibi, so Susan will be arrested for Armstrong’s murder. Concentrating his will, he lifts a trophy up into the air and leaves the room.



In the hallway, Marius picks up the scissors but the lights go out and he drops them. Fumbling in the dark, Marius grabs a candelabra and makes his way through the wall to club the sleeping figure. He beats his victim to death and laughs in triumph, but stumbles back and knocks over a trophy. Staring in horror, Marius realizes that he’s in the wrong room… and has killed his own body.
