A nobleman answers a knock at his castle door. A teenager, Betsy, has arrived and says that the agency sent her. He ushers her in and explains that his wife has gone on ahead, and that there’s no restraining her when the moon is full. The nobleman admits that their marriage has lasted a long time. Betsy wants to see the kid, and her client warns that his son can be difficult with strangers. As they talk, Betsy checks herself in the mirror and notices that the nobleman has no reflection.
Betsy offers to read the boy a bedtime story and the nobleman, a vampire, agrees. He directs Betsy to the larder if she’s hungry, and tells her that he and his wife will be back by sunrise, as always. The vampire then goes upstairs to check on his son and prepare him for bed. Betsy overhears him telling his son that he’ll like Betsy and just eat her up. The babysitter hears growling noises and notes that her employer, Mrs. Lovecraft, didn’t say anything about the new client having a dog. Betsy looks through the bookshelf and finds a collection of arcane tomes. When she hears her client put slippers on his son—four times—she panics and runs out the door.
