Marmalade Wine - Recap

A tourist, Roger Blacker, makes his way through the storm and cries out for anyone to hear him. A man calls down to him from a nearby castle, and says he'll be right down. He arrives and escorts Roger into his castle, leading him up a long flight of stairs and into an indoor patio. Roger's host goes to get wine, and introduces himself as Dr. Francis Deeking. Roger recognizes him as a famous surgeon, and Dr. Deeking explains that the castle is his retreat from the rigors of his work. He asks what Roger does, and Roger says that he's a photographer. Dr. Deeking him asks him to take a photograph of him and Roger agrees.



Once Roger is done, he promises to send a copy to the hospital. Dr. Deeking says that he's not there at present and they share another glass of wine. The doctor explains that he distills it himself from marmalade. Roger then turns the conversation to himself and says that he can predict the future. Dr. Deeking asks him to prove it by picking a winning horse. Roger picks one and Dr. Deeking goes off to make a call. While the doctor is gone, the photographer starts to get drunk admits to himself that he lied to impress Deeking, and tries to remember what he read about him. Deeking returns and tells him that he placed a bet just under the wire on Roger's horse, and asks him to predict an election. Roger makes another random guess and claims that he's helped men make millions, and then passes out.



Later, Roger wakes up in a bed. Dr. Deeking comes in and says that the horse won and the election won exactly as Roger predicted. Roger complains about a headache from his hangover, and his boots that feel too tight. He tries to leave, but Dr. Deeking insists that he stay and make more predictions for him. Roger admits that he lied, but Dr. Deeking doesn't believe him. He says that since he's retired, he's supplemented his income with investments and wants Roger to make more predictions. The photographer makes a more random predictions to satisfy his host. As Deeking runs off, Roger finally remembers that he read that Deeking went crazy and he's not allowed to practice medicine. Dr. Deeking returns with food, and Roger says he has a pressing appointment that he has to go to. The doctor says that he thought that would Roger feel that way, and took the liberty of amputating his feet.
