Professor Peabody is lecturing a college a class on the childish stories of demons and the occult, dismissing them as fantasy. One student, Mr. Bloch, talks about how superstition explained certain natural functions. Peabody dismisses the idea as rubbish, saying that primitive man should have spent his time mastering the elements instead of embracing superstition. The professor then moves on to discussion of an ancient cult that worshiped the Old Ones.
Peabody has the names of the major gods on the chalkboard and recites the names one by one, mocking each one. Outside, storm clouds gather. Mr. Derleth raises his hand and notes that according to legend, reciting the names of the gods invites the reciter to be cursed. Peabody dismisses his concern and continues to recite the names.
Outside, thunder and lightning come down and the shutters close by their own. Another student, Mr. Lovecraft, asks about a mystic tome. Peabody says that he has a copy of the book, the Necronomicon. He starts reciting from it, saying it’s nonsense... while looking nervously at the storm outside. Peabody recites a mystic incantation with increasing fervor.
Peabody finishes his recitation and the storm dies away. The students stare in horror: Peabody has been transformed into a tentacle green-slimed monstrosity, and concludes his lecture.
