Hippy Randy Miller is driving through the countryside when he goes off the road. His car explodes and he drifts through a limbo filled with tormenting demons until he lands in an empty waiting room in Hell. There’s a door marked Exit but Randy initially decides it’s not a safe place to go to. However, when he fiddles with the door knob it comes off in his hand. Randy takes out a pack of gum and throws the wrapper on the floor, and a maid instantly appears and picks it up while berating him for littering. He asks if he’s in Hell and she explains that it’s the waiting room and he’ll have to wait. He tries to explain what happened but she disappears on him.
Randy considers what Hell is like and thinks of all the classical images of suffering and torment. The “Next” light flashes over the exit door and it opens to reveal a fire door that swings open. Randy goes into the next room and finds himself in a comfortable old-fashioned lounge with a large selection of records. However, all of the records are easy listening. He drops some litter to summon the maid but she simply takes the litter and leaves. An old man appears in a rocking chair and Randy tries to talk to him to escape the boredom and the tedious music. The old man knows nothing about the Beatles and Randy is sick of being bored. A pair of tourists appear and offer to show Randy their 8,500 slides of their Mexico tour. Randy demands to see the Devil and the Prince of Darkness appears.
As the tourists start showing their slides, Randy asks when he gets out of the waiting room and goes to Hell. The Devil explains that he is in Hell, and that it’s never what you expect. Randy admits it’s a downer and the Devil explains that the exact same room exists in Heaven, where it’s someone’s idea of a pleasant afterlife. The Devil bids him farewell and departs, and Randy collapses to the floor sobbing as the slide show continues.
