A British expedition led by Major Crosby arrives at an African village, and Crosby asks to meet with Logoda. Accompanying the expedition is Henley, who is looking for his brother, an anthropologist who disappeared on an expedition several months before. Crosby says that the permit should never have been granted, and that they should have stayed will clear of Logoda’s territory, and that the witch doctor holds a lot of power.
Logoda agrees to see them, and Crosby tells Henley to let him do the talking. Crosby finally asks Logoda about Henley’s missing brother, and the witch doctor say that he hasn’t seen him. Henley insists on beating him for the information, but Crosby warns that they have no proof that Logoda killed his brother. Logoda’s sister Kyro steps out and says that Henley’s brother is dead, over her brother’s objections. She says that Logoda has warned her that he’ll put a curse on her if she tells them more. Kyro finally relents and says that Henley’s brother was there for a few days, and insisted on seeing Logoda’s heads. After that, he never returned. Logoda stands up and Kyro translates, saying that the heads are powerful magic.
Crosby insists in looking at them, and Kyro flees in terror. The two men find a collection of shrunken heads, and Crosby explains there are tales of Logoda cursing his victims to die, and then the witch doctor takes their heads and cures them over a fire. Logoda chants and the heads begin to stir in an unfelt wind. The witch doctor then says the heads have told him that Henley’s brother didn’t come there. Henley doesn’t believe it, and Crosby says that he will continue to investigate.
They search and find nothing, and Crosby says that it isn’t the end of his investigation. As they prepare to leave, Kyro asks them to take her with them. Logoda objects, but Crosby agrees to take her. As they leave, Kyro warns that they have to get back before dark.
At the residency, Crosby and Henley ask why she was there, and Kyro warns that Logoda is making his magic that night. Crosby says that they’ll protect her, and she asks him to put a guard on her door to keep Logoda from coming to her in the form of an animal. The major agrees, and the next morning he comes to check on Kyro. She emerges, unharmed, and says that the drums ended after midnight. A sergeant arrives to tell them that the old woman, Logoda’s servant, has reported that Logoda was murdered the previous night despite the fact she was outside his hut the entire time.
Crosby and his soldiers go to the hut and discover that Logoda was ripped apart while he slept, apparently by wild animals. Kyro comes with them and explains that it was her magic that was at work. She knew that Logoda killed Henley’s brother, so she avenged him. When she was in there by herself, Kyro used her magic that was stronger. Logoda could make the heads speak, but she knew how to make them kill. As Kyro smiles, they look at the shrunken heads... their teeth covered in blood.
