A woman, Ann Bolt, is driving home in a storm. When she becomes lost, she pulls up to a home and parks in the garage. There is a steel door and a woman on an intercom invites her to come inside to get directions. The house is decorated in a strange futuristic style and the woman, Pat Blessington, comes down to greet her. She says that her husband, David, is making coffee. When Ann asks to see the phone, Pat takes her to a videophone and Sandra hesitantly dials her number. She gets a busy signal, and Pat suggests that she program it to try again.
Ann asks for a cigarette and Pat says that most people don’t smoke. Her husband has a pack on hand, and Pat offers it to her. However, Ann is surprised to see that it’s a brand she doesn’t recognize it. She vows to remember the name, Pacific, and asks if she can keep the pack. Pat immediately agrees and Ann is surprised that she’s so trusting. Ann says that the painting on the screen is actually a closed circuit TV, and they saw her driving up. David arrives with a map device and calculates her route. He offers her a pencil and paper to write down the directions. Ann thanks them for their help, and David suggests that she come visit them some time. Pat is eager to have her, and Ann agrees. They watch on the closed circuit camera as Ann leaves.
The storm ends and Ann arrives at her home. She’s surprised to discover that the car and bushes are dry, and there are no thunderclouds in the sky. She goes inside and her husband, Tony, is there, dressed in a witches’ costume. He torments her, mocking her, and she says that she isn’t like that. Tony angrily accuses her of changing and insists that he can’t relax around her. Ann apologizes and explains that she got lost in the storm. Tony says that there hasn’t been any storm and wonders why she didn’t call, and Ann insists that she did. She wonders if he’s cheating on her and asks if he loves her. Tony insists that he’ll always love her. The maid, Yvonne, announces that their son has been put to bed. As Ann goes to say goodnight to her child, Tony and Yvonne exchange glances.
Later, Ann goes to see David and Pat. David is fixing a neighbor woman portable stereo, which plays strange music that Ann doesn’t recognize. The neighbor woman, Julie, insists that it’s the popular music. Ann is surprised to see Julie give David a friendly kiss on the mouth as she leaves. They talk about children, and David says that he cut his thumb when he was four when he sliced the cake. Ann mentions the kiss, but Pat isn’t upset and they talk of jealousy. Tony explains that his mother was a jealous woman and it destroyed her as she started to imagine things. When he was four, his mother thought his father was in love with another woman and killed him, and then killed herself before the trial. David says that he was raised by a distant relative named Blessington who gave him her name so he wouldn’t be associated with the scandal. He warns her to beware of jealousy. Ann has to go but invites David to come see him any time. David offers to show her a photo of her mother, but Ann has to leave.
Back at home, Ann calls Tony when he doesn’t show up at home for their son’s birthday. He claims that a cousin, Jane, came into town and he went out for a drink with her. She’s interrupted when her son cries. Yvonne says that he cut his thumb while using a knife on the birthday cake. Later, Ann doesn’t know of any such cousin, and Tony says that it’s a distant cousin, Jane Blessington. Shocked, she takes to her bed.
Later, Jane comes to see Ann, and Ann tells her to take care of his son and to give him one of the photos. She asks Jane to take care of the boy no matter what. Tony arrives with flowers and Ann explains that she somehow ended up at their son David’s house, 20 years into the future. Her husband insists that it’s a coincidence and tries to call David Blessington, but discovers that he’s not in the phonebook. Ann believes that David knew who she was and tried to warn her. Tony insists that she won’t hurt anyone, but Ann wonders what she can do.
That night, Ann takes the pack of cigarettes out of her purse. They are dated June 7, 1989, and Ann takes them to show Tony. She finds him and Yvonne kissing in the kitchen, and quickly retreats before they can see her. Ann takes a gun out of a desk drawer, goes back, and shoots Tony dead.
Later, Jane comes to see Ann, who says that she won’t need a lawyer because she won’t stand trial. She does know that David will grow up happy, and that he will forgive her because he kept her photo.
