Retired Scotland Yard researcher, Maxwell Beckett lives in San Francisco and writes mystery novels for a living. Because of his connection to Scotland Yard, people mistakenly address him as "Inspector" and he's given up trying to correct them. Besides, it's better for his book sales especially when he's been suffering from writer's block.

Reporter Nikki Page isn't getting the assignments she'd like, so she decides to enlist the Inspector to help her investigate various mysteries. He'd rather be left alone, but hopes the young reporter's ideas will inspire his next novel.
