Ralph Nelson (Best Director), Rod Serling (Best Writer), Jack Palance (Best Actor), and Ed Wynn (Best Supporting Actor) all won Emmys for their work on this episode. Requeim for a Heavyweight also won Emmys for Best Single Program of the Year and Best Art Direction.

This teleplay was made into a movie in 1962 with Anthony Quinn as Mountain, Jackie Gleason as Rennick, and Mickey Rooney as Army. The character of Mountain McClintock was renamed Mountain Rivera in the film possibly due to Quinn's Hispanic heritage.

Ed and Keenan Wynn were father and son in real life.

Kim Hunter's role as Grace Carney in this teleplay would be played by Julie Harris in the movie version.

Kim Hunter makes her first of eight appearances on Playhouse 90 in this episode. That's the most in show history. Ms. Hunter won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1950 for A Streetcar Named Desire.

Max Baer was a real life heavyweight boxing champion.
