Police Squad!

Police Squad!

Before the Naked Gun movie series, there was Police Squad! Police Squad! is a short series released by ABC in 1982. The creators of this series went on to create the Naked Gun movies (and had previously made the Airplane! spoof movie in 1980). Just like Airplane! is a disaster/thriller movie spoof, Police Squad! is a cop/crime show spoof series.

Leslie Nielson stars as Detective Frank Drebin. Det. Drebin attempts to solve crimes in six episodes. He is joined in his task by Captain Ed Hocken (Alan North), a friendly police scientist (Tedd Olson, played by Ed Williams), a shoe-shine-snitch (Johnny the snitch, played by William Duell), and by Peter Lupus as Norberg.

Be very careful when you watch the series, though, as titles and guest stars are not always what they seem (running gag of having more than one episode title, and killing off the guest stars in the opening credits). Also watch as Drebin’s police car approaches the police station, and notice that the number of trash cans increase with each episode.
