This is the second half of the first episode, or the conclusion if you will. Last episode saw the inclusion of Little John, and Wil Scarlet, and now it's time to see how the rest of the merry men came to be a part of this band. It begins with Robin Hood being being seen as a problem in the eyes of the authorities, and so the Sheriff thinks of how to deal with the 'problem.' Episode Notes
About 23 minutes into the episode you see Gisburne, Hugo, and the Sheriff entering the castle. At this location, the arch on the right hand side is in ruin, so the director put up scaffolding to make it appear to be in the process of being constructed.
Chew Valley Lake, the largest man-made lake in south-western England, located in Somerset, is the location used for the flaming arrows scene.
In the original script the part of Nasir was to be Edmund the Archer, who would die in a duel at the end of this episode. Upon seeing Mark Ryan's performance, however, they decided to re-work the script and include him as one of the merry men, but as Nasir, a Saracen.
For more locations used during the filming of this two hour special, please refer to Robin and the Sorcerer (1) Notes section.
Episode Quotes
Tuck: You cannot do this my Lord Abbot!
Gisburne: Be silent!
Tuck: My Lord Abbot this is the most wicked, evil -
Sheriff: (yelling)One word more brother Tuck, just one, and I'll have the fat flayed from your body!
Robin: This isn't an ordinary fight. It's not arrows and swords. This is a fight between the powers of light and darkness.
Simon De Belleme: (to Robin Hood) Break your bow! Throw away your arrows! They have no power. All that is servant to the lord, assume. Why hesitate? Where is your strength? Herne chose well. Is your aim true? Fire will consume you!
Episode Goofs
At the end of the previous episode, Gisburne is returned to Nottingham tied up on horseback, wearing only his underwear, yet, in this episode he has his armour once more. It seems highly unlikely, considering the value of armour at that time, that Robin Hood would have either returned it, or Gisburne would have more than one let suit alone more than one of the exact same suit!
Cultural References
Sheriff: (Talking about Marion with Simon) The Feast of Beltan.
The Feast of Beltan (sometimes Beltane), a variant on May Day (May 1st), was celebrated in Anglo-Saxon times in the Scottish Highlands. It included a human sacrifice to Baal a deity they believed would provide a productive year if appeased. The Baron mentions this day as the day in which he would like Marion to be handed over to him, presumably in order to sacrifice.
Simon: Aziel has told me.
Aziel is one of the 'fallen angels' (along with well known Satan), who is now considered a demon.
