Robin of Sherwood: Alan A Dale

Pulled straight from the old Robin Hood ballads, this is the story of a young minstrel, Alan A Dale, who passes through Sherwood, and when confronted by Robin, it's discovered he has no money. When asked where he's travelling to, he tells them he's on his way to kill the Sheriff! His love, Mildred, daughter of nobleman Baron De Bracey, is to wed the Sheriff, and he can't let that happen. Lured by promise of a large dowry, Robin agrees to aid Alan in recovering his precious Mildred and the dowry!

Episode Notes
Alnwick Castle, located in north-eastern county of Northumberland, was used as the outside location for Nottingham Castle, as well as Nottingham Castle courtyard. The gate that Marion and Much drive the wagon through, however, is located at Farleigh Hungerford Castle, on the border of Somerset and Wiltshire.

Episode Quotes
Meg: Tell me, why do they call you Little John?

Sheriff: Isn't there a hundred court tomorrow?
Gisburne: Yes my Lord, at Wickham.
Sheriff: Apparently a man called Gervais is buying corn before it comes to market, and the bailiff's losing his custom. Deal with it will you.
Gisburne: Yes my Lord... shall I hang him?
Sheriff: (emphatically)Noooo Gisburne. A public flogging will do.

Marion: Where you going?
Alan: Nottingham.
Marion: To seek your fortune?
Alan: To kill the Sheriff.
John (?): Hang on there Alan!
Robin: To kill the Sheriff?! How 're you gonna do that?
Alan: With my trusty sword. (merry men all laugh)
Will: Trusty sword!

Gisburne: When will the ceremony take place my Lord?
Sheriff: When I'm drunk enough to go through with it!

Robert de Rainault, Sheriff of Nottingham: Vanished!
Sir Guy of Gisburne: That's what they said, Mylord.
Robert de Rainault, Sheriff of Nottingham: And you believed them?
Sir Guy of Gisburne: No, Mylord, I had them whipped.
Robert de Rainault, Sheriff of Nottingham: You've searched the village?
Sir Guy of Gisburne: Yes, Mylord.
Robert de Rainault, Sheriff of Nottingham: And found nothing.
Sir Guy of Gisburne: Nothing, Mylord.
Robert de Rainault, Sheriff of Nottingham: And nobody had seen them, I suppose?
Sir Guy of Gisburne: No, Mylord.
Mylord, I suggest, we drive them all in the forrest and burn Wickham to the ground. As an example, Mylord!
Robert de Rainault, Sheriff of Nottingham: (gazing into space, then turning the head to Gisburne) As an example of what, hm?!! I'll tell you Gisburne, shall I?! Since you're obviously incapable of answering my question! (Sheriff suddenly explodes) As an example of your stupidity, an example of your ignorance, (yelling as mad as hell, demolishing the dining table on his bathtub) as an example of your total inability to control the people of Sherwood and to destroy the power of Robin Hood!!! (to subordinate, who's trying to clean up) Leave me alone!!

Cultural References
Tuck: Not nearly enough. There's tallage, scutage, Saladadin tithe, King Richard's ransom.

  • tallage: essentially a land tax
  • scutage: a tax paid to the king in lieu of military service. Although it is a knight or nobleman who usually must pay, perhaps it was transferred to the serfs by the said knight or nobleman and Tuck's words reflect that.
  • Saladin tithe: a 10% tithe levied in 1189 as a result of Saladin's capture of Jerusalem, in order to fund a new Crusade.
  • Saladin: In case you'd like to know, Saladin (Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub) was a Kurdish Muslim warrior from the 12th century.
  • King Richard's ransom: in 1192, despite a disguise, King Richard was captured then held for ransom by Henry VI, the Holy Roman Emperor. The ransom was steep at 150,000 marcs. The result was laymen (and others) taxed a quarter of the value of their property.
