  Cultural References
De Talmont quotes the Bible's Book of Proverbs:
Proverbs 22:7: The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

The Sheriff refers to two massacres, the first after King Richard I's coronation on September 3, 1189, and another in York the following March (16th and 17th). These massacres were widespread at the time, and were said to be a reaction to the Crusades, however, more probable is their instigation by those who were indebted most strongly: the nobles.
