At an Elvis impersonators contest, the winner is announced and collects his trophy. As he heads home, a man in blue suede shoes follows him and then clubs him to death with a golden mike. The next day, Hammer, Doreau, and Trunk investigate the murder: the fifteenth of an Elvis impersonator in three weeks. Hammer and Doreau go to the morgue where Coroner Norman Blates notes nobody can identify the bodies because they all alike. Hammer settles down to lunch while Blates explains that all of the victims were clubbed to death with a gold-plated object: a microphone. Going over the case, Doreau is irritated with Hammer's casual attitude toward the case. Trunk warns that the promoters won't stop the contest and is getting a headache. Hammer offers to perform acupuncture, but Trunk declines.
Another Elvis impersonator has collected his trophy and is clubbed to death , but this time there's a witness. The police bring her in and have a sketch artist create a drawing of the killer: he's an Elvis impersonator. Unfortunately the witness can't pick the killer out of a lineup because they all look alike. Hammer has them perform and she recognizes one of them by his arm swings. Unfortunately, Trunk reveals that the suspect is a cop. Hammer suggests he do Elvis and lure the killer in. Meanwhile, Doreau determines that all the victims attended the same Elvis impersonator school and enrolls Hammer in the same courses.
Hammer arrives at the course, already in costume. The teacher, Mr. P, claims he's the best but Hammer is less than impressed. Mr. P calls Hammer up on his attitude and demands that he perform. Hammer is lousy but when Mr. P accuses him of being a wuss, Hammer goes again with a lot more enthusiasm: and a few kicks and throws to the audience. That night, Hammer breaks into the records office but is interrupted by the custodian, Yamamoto, and forced to leave despite the fact Hammer identifies himself as a policeman.
The department gets Hammer into the Elvis impersonator semi-finals and he goes on stage while Doreau watches from backstage. He doesn't sing well and the crowd start throwing things. Provoked, Hammer fires his gun into the ceiling and insists they act courteously. He then breaks into a dance routine which grows over with the crowd and wraps up with a patriotic number. The Emcee tries to award him the trophy and Hammer flips him then collects the cup. He goes to his car and a Elvis impersonator seemingly attacks him. Hammer knocks him down but the man claims he was just trying to offer his congratulations. Doreau is skeptical, noting the man didn't have a golden microphone.
Back in the bar, they find an impersonator rehearsing... with a golden microphone. They approach the Asian man, who says he's the great Elvis impersonator of all time and clearly superior. The killer tells Hammer he didn't kill him because he knew he was a police officer, revealing that he's... Yamamoto, from the impersonator school. Hammer and Doerau try to arrest him but he knows martial arts and knocks Hammer's gun away. A shot goes into the electrical wiring and the man brings Hammer down, then prepares to club him to death. However, when he raises his golden mike he hits the loose wiring and electrocutes himself.
Late at the station, Hammer is listening to music on a Walkman when Trunk informs him the killer will recover. Trunk mocks Hammer about is impersonation skills and Hammer decides to take to take a break from all the Elvis references... by going to Graceland.
