Over My Dead Bodyguard - Recap

Hammer arrives at the station and discovers that Trunk is testifying against the Syndicate, making him a marked man. The commissioner calls from his car and splits his time between talking to his driver and Hammer. He orders Hammer to take custody of Trunk to protect him. Trunk is less than thrilled that Hammer is in charge. After the commissioner goes off the road because of his driver, Trunk is called away to check on supplies with two cops and refuses to let Hammer go with him. However, Hammer realizes the "cops" were carrying non-regulation guns. The killers drag Trunk into a closet and try to kill him, but Hammer arrives and manages to defeat them after hitting Trunk a few times. After the assassins are taken away, Trunk informs Doreau and Hammer he plans to meet with his ex-wife after setting a dinner up after several months. Hammer assures Trunk he won't even know he's there.



Trunk meets with his ex-wife Renee and tries to convince her that being a policeman is the furthest thing from his mind. Hammer tries to blend in while running security and doesn't do very well, and Renee quickly realizes something is up. She insists that something at the precinct has turned him into an angry, bitter man. He can only look at Hammer and tell her he had to make a choice between his career and his wedding. He admits he's recently been questioning that decision. When a waiter orders a champagne bottle, Hammer throws himself at Trunk. Trunk escorts Renee home and she lets him in to talk, but Hammer has to search the place. Thoroughly and destructively. He and Doreau finally leave the couple alone... for a minute. He finally goes in as the couple are talking and Trunk orders him out. As soon as Hammer is gone, two men break in and grab the couple. Hammer insists to Doreau they should be left alone. Finally a gunshot goes off in the struggle and Hammer and Doreau take out the killers.



Hammer has no choice but to take Trunk to his apartment. He wonders how Trunk could give up his career for a woman. They go to sleep but Hammer arrests criminals in his sleep. As Trunk gets up, a shooter takes him out from the window and escapes, leaving Hammer with a corpse. The next day, the newspapers announce that the grand jury has been put on hold. Hammer takes command and informs his fellow officers that Trunk will be interred in a private ceremony. Everyone goes back to work and a mourning Doreau wonders how Hammer can be so insensitive. Finally he tells her that Trunk is at the hospital for minor surgery to remove the bullet. Hammer broadcast the news of Trunk's supposed death to throw off the killers.



Hammer and Doreau visit Trunk at the hospital but Hammer makes the mistake of telling Renee. Trunk points out that she'll be followed by the Syndicate and she arrives. Doreau gets her to safety while Hammer attacks the new cop outside, until Trunk explains it's a friend. The nurse comes in to administer medication and Hammer is forced to screen it. Elsewhere in the hospital, an assassin takes out a doctor and then visits Trunk using the doctor's ID. He asks Hammer to come with him for a security check in the operating room while Doreau watches trunk. In the operating room, the assassin uses anesthetic on Hammer to knock him out, then straps him into an x-ray machine. He explains that he'll administer an overdose of anesthetic and it will appear to be an accident. The assassin turns on the machine and heads for Trunk's room.



Doreau figures something is wrong and goes to find Hammer. She releases him and Hammer staggers into Trunk's room. Despite his condition he manages to shoot the scalpel out of the assassin's hand. The two men fight over Trunk until Doreau finally knocks out the assassin. Hammer steps all over Trunk and tries to find the assassin among the masked operating team. He finally locates his target and knocks him out. Since they can't trust anyone else, Hammer insists on removing the bullet, noting he's removed one from himself. Trunk makes a run for it.



Later, Trunk returns from the trial after giving testimony and admits that his ex-wife now understands him a little better and they're going off together for the weekend at Lake Tahoe. The commissioner calls to congratulate Hammer on saving Trunk's life and orders him to protect Trunk for another month. Hammer starts planning his trip to Lake Tahoe.
