Haven't Gun, Will Travel - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Hammer and Doreau stop in at a diner to pick up coffee and Sledge takes the time to admire his gun again. They're interrupted when they hear gunshots from a shootout at an armored car nearby. Doreau runs out and Hammer saunters out. The crooks see him and run in terror, where officers intercept them. One of them tries to escape and Hammer blows the tires out.

At a factory, crook Fredricks is planning for his super crime but is angry and upset that Hammer interfered in the armored car heist. There's no way Hammer can be bought or taken care of. He tells his underling Eddie to get rid of Hammer but Eddie doesn't have a clue. Fredricks gets a call from someone who can put Hammer out of action for $80,000.

Police psychiatrist Dr. Weisbart checks in with Trunk and notes that he's upset at Hammer most recent case and has pulled his file. Trunk is eager to hear if Weisbart can put him away, but the doctor just wants to talk to Hammer for now. Hammer refuses to see Weisbart but Trunk orders him to see Weisbart. The psychiatrist has Hammer undergo therapy and Hammer reveals he never takes off his gun. Hammer talks about the first time he fired his gun and Weisbart administers a Rorschach test. All Hammer sees are images of guns and violence.

That night, Hammer sleeps with his gun on the pillow next to him but gets up to turn off the TV. A robber slips into the room and takes his .44 Magnum. The next morning, Hammer wakes up to discover his gun is gone. He heads for the station only to discover his car is blocked in by taxis. He gets the taxis to move and (eventually) pulls out. A haggard Hammer turns the place upside down trying to find it and Trunk orders him to requisition a different weapon.

Fredricks goes over the plans for his silver heist with his crooks, sure that Hammer is no longer a problem. Weisbart arrives to turn over Hammer's gun.

Hammer is putting up wanted posters for his gun when he's ordered to the firing range to collect his new gun. They're out of .44 Magnums and the officer gives him a .38. Then the officer reveals it's reserved and gives Hammer a .22. The bullets don't even get to the target. Hammer has no choice but to take the gun. On the streets, he and Doreau spot a robber and Hammer draws his new gun... or tries to but he can't find it in the holster. It finally falls out but by then the robber has escaped.

Hammer goes to a bar to drink and he can't sleep. Dori admits that she's seen a new, softer side of him but Hammer admits it's sapped his self-confidence. Unfortunately, Dori has to give him the news that his gun was used in a silver heist. Hammer goes berserk and Trunk orders him to see Weisbart again. The psychiatrist suggests that Hammer might love his gun too much and suggests he find a woman. However, when Weisbart talks about Hammer sleeping with his gun, Hammer realizes that Weisbart was responsible for the robbery. Dori connects the gun theft to the silver heist and they follow Weisbart to Fredricks' smelting factory. Doreau and Hammer sneak inside but Hammer starts to lose it again. Fredricks is preparing to melt the silver down and reveals he's going to melt down Hammer's gun first. Doreau tries to take them into custody but Fredricks holds Hammer's gun hostage and tosses it into the fire. Hammer reaches into the flames and manages to grab his gun, then drops the red-hot weapon. Once it cools down, Hammer moves Doreau aside and shoots the guns out of all the crooks' hands. Weisbart is trying to escape out the side and Hammer arrests him. Doreau is sad to see that Hammer is back to his old self.
