As the partners walk along the street, Doreau is skeptical of Hammer's theory that criminal activity is genetic and the babies of criminals should be thrown in jail. Hammer spots a robber hitting a convenience store and Hammer smashes through the door and disarms the crook. As they call in the crime, Hammer tests his theory by asking what the criminal's father did. When the man admits his father is a Presidential press secretary, Hammer admits he never had a chance. Back at the station, Doreau announces that someone was arrested for breaking into the Wentworth manor: Hammer's brother. Hammer says he doesn't have a brother but the man, Myles, is in Trunk's office. Hammer goes in to find Trunk chuckling at Myles' stories. Hammer grabs Myles but Doreau says that the records, provided by Officer Bellman, confirm Myles is his brother. He grew up in an orphanage after his parents abandoned him. A charmed Trunk and Doreau vie to let Myles use their phones for his one phone call but Hammer isn't buying it. Doreau points out that Myles invalidates Hammer's genetic criminal theory.
At his trial hearing, the judge announces that the Wentworth woman dropped the charges and Myles explained that he reached an "arrangement' with her. When Hammer protests, the judge threatens to hold him for contempt but Myles intervenes on his behalf. Doreau suggests that Myles live with Hammer, and the inspector reluctantly agrees. At Hammer's apartment, Hammer warns that his landlady is strict and doesn't allow roommates. She comes in but like everyone else is charmed by Myles and allows him to stay. Hammer sets up the spare bed and Myles brings up their mother and father while admiring their photo. Hammer starts to soften slightly and Myles says that they'd be proud of him. He admits he kept a scrapbook of Hammer's exploits and he admired him too. Hammer offers him the bed and wishes him goodnight. Once Hammer is gone, Myles makes a coded call to Bellman at the police station.
Hammer arrives at the station the next day to find everyone praising Myles. Doreau wonders if he's jealous and admits she's dating Myles. Hammer is less than thrilled but she insists on going. They meet at a French restaurant and Myles knows exactly what to say and order. At home, Sledge is working himself up and firing shots into the ceiling. At the restaurant, the waitresses are fighting over Myles as he dances with Doreau. However, she asks what Hammer's middle name is and when he says "Alfred," she points out Sledge doesn't have a middle name. Myles tries to cover up his mistake and tries to kiss her, but Doreau throws him into a table. The next day she talks to Hammer and tells him what she discovered. Hammer figures that Bellman provided Myles with the confidential information. They confront Bellman who reveals that Myles has dumped her after promising he would marry him. She explains that Myles set the whole thing up as cover to rob Mrs. Wentworth, and is actually an off-Broadway actor.
They get word that Myles has been surrounded at the Wentworth manor, dressed as Hammer, and has taken a hostage. He demands to talk to Hammer. Hammer and Doreau arrive and explain to Trunk what's going on. Myles demands a private meeting with Hammer and Trunk reluctantly orders everyone else out. Hammer goes up the stairs to confront Myles, who asks for a head start. Hammer agrees once he releases the hostage. As Myles walks away, Hammer yanks the carpet out from under him and the police capture him.
Later, Doreau and Trunk go over Hammer's family tree and discover his roots go back to Ivan the Terrible, Genghis Khan, and Gandhi. Hammer is less than thrilled... with the latter.
