D.S. Freddie Spender is an undercover Geordie cop but has been in London for the last 15 years. He and his partner D.S. Colin Driver are on an undercover operation which goes horribly wrong and Spender is transferred back to his native Newcastle, much to his disgust.
Upon his return, he must confront an ex-wife and kids, a murky past and some local villains. His boss, Supt. Yelland also has dislikes Spender, and thinks he's a pain in the arse.
Yelland assigns Spender to a case involving Raymond Price.

David Innes Edwards, the Location Manager for this episode (and the whole of series one) later went on to direct three episodes of
Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.
Tony McAnaney previously appeared in an episode of
Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, he played a Country and Western Band Member. McAnaney is a friend of Jimmy Nail's and he also wrote the theme music and incidental music. McAnaney also produced and played guitar on Jimmy Nail's album, Crocodile Shoes, he also wrote the song of the name. McAnaney also wrote the Incidental Music for Crocodile Shoes in 1994.
David Haddow, who plays Sidekick, later went on to appear in an episode of
Crocodile Shoes II, alongside Jimmy Nail.

The Dire Straits were a band from the North-East. They formed in 1977 and broke up in 1995. They had many hits ranging between those years. Incidentally, the lead singer, Mark Knopfler played guitar on one of Jimmy Nail's songs.
