While on a study-date with Felicia, Peter notices a guy following him, so he leaves Felicia to find out what he’s up to. Before he can apprehend the stalker, an explosion goes off, causing Spider-Man to lose track of him. The man turns out to be Mac Gargan, a man who’s always being intimidated and insulted by others, who was hired by Jameson to find out how Peter always gets his photos of Spider-Man, believing they have some sort of a connection. Peter decides to become Spider-Man and convince Jameson that he can’t stand Peter, and in the process humiliates Mac Gargan, who now wants revenge. Jameson hires Dr. Farley Stillwell, the creator of neogenics, to enhance Mac Gargan’s strength and stamina so that he can defeat Spider-Man. Dr. Stillwell combines Mac Gargan’s DNA with that of a scorpion, as scorpions are natural predators of spiders, using the neogenic recombinator. Now deemed “the Scorpion”, Mac sets out to destroy Spider-Man, though he becomes ashamed at what he’s become and decides to destroy the city if he isn’t turned back into Mac Gargan again.

Episode Notes |
| |
This episode is banned from the network Toon Disney, due to it being the only episode that features the word "kill". It also only aired once on its original network, FOX. | This episode shows viewers why J. Jonah Jameson is so fixed on getting Spider-Man arrested and put in jail. | Dr. Stillwell tells J. Jonah Jameson that he chose to turn Mac Gargan into a human scorpion because the scorpion is a natural predator of the spider. |

Episode Quotes |
| |
Spider-Man: It's not nice to rob jewelry stores in Mr. Spider-Man's neighborhood. Can you say "I'm going to jail"? | Arsons: It's Spider-Man!
Spider-Man: Spider-Man? Where? Where? Oh, I just get so flushed in the presence of a superhero! | Arson: It's three against one!
Spider-Man: As far as I'm concerned, that means you're out-numbered! | Spider-Man: Who is he? A mugger after my money? If I can find any I'll split it with him. | Spider-Man: Well, if it isn't the meeting of the "Diamond Lovers of America"! | Peter: (about J. Jonah Jameson) He's got no use for me! He hates Spider-Man! I'll bet he can't even stand himself! | Aunt May: You need to get home. You sound like you're catching a bug.
Peter: (after seeing the Scorpion) I sure hope so. |

Cultural References |

Spider-Man: Who do I look like? The Tick?
This is a reference to The Tick, which was also airing on Fox Kids at the same time as Spider-Man.
Also, at the end of this episode (during the end credits), when it originally aired on FOX, there was a segment in which the Tick tells viewers to watch his show, which was coming up next. As does Beast, who tells viewers not to miss X-Men. | Spider-Man: If those flames were accidental, then I'm the Human Torch!
This is a reference to the Human Torch, who belongs to the group known as "The Fantastic Four." The Fantastic Four had a series airing along side this one during the mid-nineties. The two television series eventually crossed over during the end of season five. | Spider-Man: If you're looking to join the Fantastic Four, you're in the wrong place.
This is yet another reference to The Fantastic Four. |
